Revisiting place through the lens of racial history: A work session with Atlantic Black Box.

Join us on June 3rd, for this follow up virtual work session to the March 3rd presentation, with Meadow Dibble and Dr. Kate McMahon of Atlantic Black Box.

The session is designed for conservationists interested in and committed to:

  • learning to research and interpret the hidden history of the special places we care for
  • broadening the narrative of these places to include those who came before
  • acknowledging the role that Maine played in the slave trade and global slave economy
  • building new partnerships with organizations to amplify and increase impact
  • creating inclusive spaces
  • promoting historical stewardship

This event is designed for staff and volunteers of conservation organizations who focus on land stewardship, property interpretation and signage, and educational programming. Special attention will be paid to designing distinct projects for summer interns.

Atlantic Black Box empowers communities throughout New England to embark on their own unique journeys of historical recovery. Mobilizing a vast coalition of scholars, museum specialists, educators, community leaders, engaged artists, genealogists, racial justice activists, archivists, and descendants, we support individuals and institutions in the work of unearthing and reckoning with our region’s fraught history of complicity in the global slave trade and the economy of enslavement.
